Office 365 Local File Synchronization Issues Solved

The Layer2 Cloud Connector can solve many issues with Office 365 out-of-the-box local file synchronization regarding the number of files allowed (>5.000, >20.000), file names and path length allowed, file types allowed and others. It also comes with flexible sync options to support subfolders in data source and destination, source filter options and more.

Sync an unlimited number of files with Office 365 and OneDrive for Business

  • Unlimited number of files: By default the number of Office 365 files to sync with local computers is limited to 5.000 (SharePoint) or 20.000 (OneDrive for Business). This is a limitation of the Microsoft sync software and can be bypassed by 3rd party tools. But take care about storage limitations (depending on plan) and also bandwidth limitations, especially for the first sync. Only changes are synchronized later on within seconds or very few minutes (depending on  amount of changes). Please edit your SharePoint views to still be able to navigate your files in the SharePoint user interface: Remove all sorting, filtering, grouping. Also set to flat view in the folder section of the view, if required. You can make use of SharePoint search or managed metadata navigation to still find your files without any restriction. A 100.000 files sync per library should be no problem (depending on settings).
  • All Office 365 plans supported: The Layer2 Cloud Connector can be used with any version or plan of SharePoint (on-premises, externally hosted or cloud-based), Office 365, OneDrive for Business (not SP 2007).
  • Centrally managed server-to-cloud tool: No client-side tool.
  • Flexible file sync options: Support of local directories, server file shares, target library subdirectories, additional no-insert / no-update / no-delete options. One-way or two-way sync. Sync files to libraries or just the metadata to lists.
  • Centrally managed connections: Installation on a server or client in the company's network. Runs as a Windows Service. Centrally managed by the administrator in the Windows Management Console.
  • Office 365 file name issues solved: Some special characters are replaced by default during sync. But better to fix the issues before sync.
  • Office 365 file path length issues solved: Path is shortened automatically if required. But better to fix the issues before sync.
  • Office 365 file type issues fixed: Forbidden file types (e.g. exe) are zipped automatically.
  • Office 365 empty file issues solved: By default no empty files are allowed. Blanks inserted automatically during sync to close this gap.
  • Flexible column mapping: You can auto-map or manually map specific file meta data to custom SharePoint list or library columns.
  • SharePoint view support for sync: Custom views can be used for sync, e.g. sync several sources into one library.
  • SQL support for file system queries: Planned for next releases. You can e.g. sync specific date ranges ("new files") or specific file types only.
  • Replication conflict management: Several different options to solve replication conflicts. General error management.
  • Flexible authentication options: Windows accounts or Windows integrated, Office 365, Active Directory Federated (ADFS) and others.
  • Advanced logging and alerting options: NLOG is used to allow log to file (default), SQL, Windows etc. with error notifications and alerting. Different log levels provided.
